Conventions of pop punk

Punk rock is a genre that is usually associated with teenagers and the band members are usually under 30 years old. The genre also usually has lyrical themes about, love, parties and future and past. This means that the conventions of the music video is usually teen based themes and often has hints of humour in it to entertain the viewer.

This is from the music video for Backseat Serenade by All Time Low. They are also a band in the punk rock genre. As we can see, the members here all look under the age of 30. This agrees with the convention of age within the genre and we will also stick to this.

This is once again from the backseat serenade music video. We can also see that it is built to entertain as the lead singer  is dressed up as a cat. This makes the band appear as humorous as well as providing a source of entertainment in the video, Once again, suiting the pop punk style of music video

This is another All Time Low song, This time, Time-Bomb. In this music video, there is a performance from the band as seen above as well as a narrative. The Narrative is about a man trying to rescue his partner. He also makes a bomb in this video. This means the video has a narrative as well as suiting the love convention of some punk rock songs. This means it is a good example of a conventional pop punk music video

This shot shows an unconventional idea but it is also a very interesting and effective one. This shows the performance crossing with the narrative but they are still seen as two separate occurrences as they do not interact with each other. This is an interesting and effective idea we could possibly use.

This is from the music video for Bridges by Courage my Love. This band are very similar to Call Atlantis who are the band we have chosen to use for production.  The mise-en-scene in this video also suit the convention of it being aimed at teens and young adults as it is a schools American football game. This means that the viewers can relate to the band as they could have been to a similar event. We could also use something similar to this within our production.

Also, in this genres music videos, there is many close ups and mid shots that cut in time to the vocals or the instrument. This is seen in most, if not all pop punk promos.

  1. Your R&P is developing well - you have shown a proficient understanding of conventions and explore promo history and theoretical approaches in detail - this is a high C / low B.

You haven't posted what was required this week - lyric analysis, song structure - why not? You need to make sure that you maximise the marks for this element.

Your next step is to analyse two or three promos of the same genre as you are producing and analyse how they use conventions - needs to be genre specific. You've started to do this but you need to be a bit more detailed. Still look at camerawork, editing and especially mise-en-scene as indicators of genre.
