Conventions of a Music Promo

Conventions of a Music Promo
Miley Cyrus 'We can't stop'

The narrative of this music promo represents the conventional places in which you would hear this pop/dance music genre. The narrative involves a house party with alcohol consumption and guests getting drunk. The guests then begin to dance with 'the host', Miley Cyrus and sing along to the track. This shows a realistic and conventional representation of the situations in which the listener would be expected to be involved in. This allows a specific audience to be targeted through a realistic and relatable situation of a house party. However a narrative is not conventional of a music promo as the video is supposed to focus on the song rather than a well-structured and clear narrative. The song is less focused on due to the storytelling of a party which takes place in the music promo.

It is conventional to show different aspects of advertising within the mise en scene of a music promo. At the start of the 'We can't stop' music video product placement is used. It is conventional to use advertisement of another product within a music promo as it allows two medias to work together and sell both the single and the product together. The product used at the beginning of the promo is a Beats Pill, which is a speaker. Although this prop adds to the party theme which is shown throughout the music promo, it is also a way of two companies sharing their products so both products are well known. This is one way mise-en-scene is used in music promos. Another way mise en scene is used in the music promo is when a girl is shown to be throwing up in a toilet. This is conventional of alcohol and the famous lifestyle of an artist. In this promo the girl is shown to be dressed in short and revealing outfits which show the representation of women as sexual objects. This representation of women is conventional in music promos as it makes the music promo controversial. This causes more people to talk about it, watch the promo and possibly purchase the single. The lighting which is used within the promo, changes depending on the narrative. At first the setting is in a bedroom and the lighting is very high, however when the party scenes are shown the lighting is much darker, representing a club and party atmosphere. Having dim lighting for party scenes is conventional in music videos as it makes them realistic.

Cinematography is used in a conventional way of music promos. For example the first shot is of an electronic tag which represents the idea of illegal acts and prison. It is a common convention to have an object which has a lot of controversy surrounding it, in a music promo as then people who have viewed the video express their interest to others who will then also watch the video. In this music promo mid shots and close ups are used a lot as these are the conventional shot to show and inform the audience of the artist. Mid shots show body language and facial expression which allows the viewer to understand what the artist is like and decide whether or not they like the way the artist acts. Close ups are used to show facial expression or if an object is the focus, they show a common party object such as lip gloss, which again shows women as a stereotyped gender who enjoy make up but also show a conventional object for a female artists music promo. A few long shots are included to show the guests dancing and enjoying the party which is common and makes the viewer feel as though they are party of the party themselves.

Miley Cyrus' 'We can't stop' begins with slow editing in the form of cuts. This corresponds with the speed of the music as the song begins at a slow and relaxed pace which the editing follows. However the music then begins to get louder and at a slightly quicker pace, just before the chorus. The cut editing get quicker and more shots are put into a shorter space of time. This makes the promo faster paced and shows the narrative beginning to get more exciting. A change of pace due to the soundtrack becoming quicker or slower is conventional of the genre as it helps to make the promo enjoyable to watch and easy to follow. When the male voice begins a white mask is shown on a black background singing the lyrics. This is unconventional but shows that technology is becoming more available and easier to access.
